Recovery from Addiction and Co-dependency
Whether you are in recovery from an addiction or involved with someone who is or was, the challenges of maintaining emotional sobriety while dealing with strongly held emotions can be a set up for relapse and regression. Often a deep sense of pain and shame accompany the experience. Past trauma is often a companion to this experience and needs treatment.
Therapy can help you establish a plan for relapse prevention, manage emotional reactivity, improve your tools for self soothing and effective communication. Along with your twelve step recovery or support group, psychotherapy strengthens you to stay the course of a clean, healthy lifestyle of meaning and new vitality. Therapy will help you recognize and let go what you cannot change while activating what you can. Then the “reasonable happiness” referenced in the extended form of the serenity prayer can be yours.
